The events of this past weekend's Mr. Olympia competition got me thinking about the importance of setting your sights on a goal, structuring everything you do around achieving that goal and then executing the plan with perfection. Shawn Rhoden did just that in his triumphant victory over 7-time champ Phil Heath. When it comes to the bodybuilding lifestyle, structure and execution go hand in hand on a daily basis. You have to plan your day around your meals, your cardio, your weight training, your therapies and your rest. You have to be able to perform on the highest level possible with everything you do and it's how you go about it that will determine how far you can actually go in this sport. For those of you who continue to struggle with balancing life and the gym, here are a few helpful suggestions and/or reminders about the importance of structured execution within your day.

Maximize Time

Every single minute of your day should count towards something. Wasting time doing nothing at all pertaining to your overall goals is where most people ultimately fail. If you are structured and have your day perfectly planned out and timed to the tee, you will never waste a single moment and you will maximize your time like never before. Once you start implementing a structured daily routine you'll find that you get way more done than usual simply because you're on the clock and time is of the essence. Your rate of efficiency will increase, you'll spend less time or no time at all on meaningless tasks and you'll have tremendous focus. Remember, time is muscle and there's no time to waste.

You can Handle More

The most successful people out there, including Heyday Footwear founder Darin Hager, are always on the go and never stop. That's because these people have perfected the art of structured execution so well that they can take on and handle more responsibilities at the same time than anyone else. The more you can do in a day, the more money you will make, the more muscle you will grow and the more success you will experience. If you're constantly all over the map and have no real direction to your day, you'll just be haphazardly making your way through time and that in itself is a recipe for disaster when it comes to accomplishing anything.

Visions become Reality

Finally and most importantly, structured execution brings with it the possibly of seeing your visions become reality. When you have a sophisticated plan in place and you stick with that plan through thick and thin, your finish line will get closer and closer by the day until one day you wake up and realize you're finally there. Of course this all depends upon your willingness to work your ass off every single day and stay true to who you are and what you want to achieve, but as we saw on Saturday night, anything can happen in the world of bodybuilding and anything can happen for you too as long as you believe in your vision and execute your plan with sniper-like precision.

As difficult as it can be to start adding structure to your life, especially if it's something you aren't really used to, once you get going with it you'll find that you eventually start to crave it in its absence. Ask any bodybuilder what it feels like after a competition when they don't really need to follow a strict schedule anymore and they're free to do whatever. They'll tell you it feels weird that they don't have to adhere to any sort of structure if they don't want to and quickly end up going back to their pre-competition ways. So if you're ready to achieve your goals, make a plan, structure your day accordingly, execute all that you do with perfection and stay strapped in your Heydays as you make your way to the top.
